Biffle Rolls A Pole In Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Greg Biffle was discovered as a young driver in NASCAR's old "Winter Heat" series.

Friday Biffle kept the heat on his NEXTEL Cup Series competitors.

Biffle earned his second career Bud Pole in his 117th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start on Friday after he posted a fast lap of 172.403 mph around the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It was a great start to the weekend for Biffle and the Roush Racing team, which has dominated Cup racing at LVMS since the track first opened its gates. Roush has scored five Vegas NEXTEL Cup wins, but Biffle gave car owner Jack Roush his first pole at the track on Friday.

"Well I knew we had a good car, but I didn't think it was that good," said Biffle. "The guys really put a lot of work into getting this car ready for Vegas and I'm looking forward to trying to get us to victory lane from the pole on Sunday."

Biffle is looking to turn around the disappointing start that he's had to the season, which most recently included an engine failure two weeks ago at California Speedway when he by far had the most dominant car of the day.

"Yeh, we haven't been very lucky so far this year," he said. "But what better place to change your luck than here in Las Vegas."

Tony Stewart surprised many by qualifying second, a big leap forward after a mediocre practice session for the defending series champion.

Defending race winner Jimmie Johnson qualified third with Las Vegas native Kyle Busch fourth and Kasey Kahne fifth.

Kurt Busch, Joe Nemechek, Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth and Brian Vickers rounded out the first ten qualifiers.

It wasn't a good day for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who has traditionally struggled at Las Vegas over the years with an average finish of 21st. Earnhardt nearly wrecked on both his qualifying laps and wound up 47th overall.

Six drivers failed to make the field; Brandon Ash, Hermie Sadler, Mike Skinner, Morgan Shepherd, Randy Lajoie and Hermie Sadler.

Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 will take the green flag at 3:30 p.m. (ET) with live coverage by FOX and PRN.
