Not many drivers would consider a season that included four wins and a Daytona 500 victory a disappointment. But 2005 was just that for Gordon, who failed to make the "Chase" and wound up finishing 11th in the final series standings, his worst finish since being a NEXTEL Cup rookie in 1993. Gordon notched three wins in the season's first nine races, but then fell on hard times that saw him drop out of contention for a fifth series title by late summer.

2006 Prognosis
The best thing Gordon and the Hendrick Motorsports team did last year was shift into 2006 mode after failing to make the "Chase." New crew chief Steve Letarte came on board for the final ten races of the year and immediately clicked with Gordon, a run that included a win at Martinsville. Gordon says he feels as if this year's Daytona 500 is really the 11th race of 2006 for the newly-organized team, which could spell bad news for the rest of the field. If he stays out of Wrigley Field in 2006, it could be a banner year for Gordon.

Race to the Chase
Talk of Gordon being "washed-up" will end in 2006 as he charges into the "Chase" and wins the 2006 championship.
