Race Day: California

Only one race is in the book for 2006 and the NEXTEL Cup Series season is already in overdrive.

Bad blood, drivers sniping at each other, controversy over rules and penalties; the first seven days of the year have had just about everything.

Tony Stewart got into things with reporters on Saturday at Fontana, the first opportunity the media had to catch up with Stewart after his eventful Daytona 500.

Unfortunately, Stewart didn't want to discuss the events of the past.

"If you want to talk about California, we have all the time in the world to talk to you," Stewart told one reporter who had the nerve to ask about a Daytona race that saw Stewart get penalized for rough driving and involved in on track scrapes with Jeff Gordon, Matt kenseth and Kyle Busch. "If you want to talk about last week [Daytona], you can turn around and go somewhere else because I've learned my lesson about talking."

So much for the "kinder, gentler" Tony Stewart.

While Stewart wasn't in the mood for talking, Kyle Busch was.

Asked about his run in with the defending champion, Busch fired off this gem:

"I represent a lot of women and children and Tony represents a lot of bearded old guys and contractors that go to Home Depot and pick up tools and stuff. I've got a different crowd. The women and children are, 'Ooh, what's Kyle going to say?' Tony Stewart, he can pretty much rattle off what the wants."

OK.

Ryan Newman was also in a chatty mood. The Penske South driver is still talking about Jimmie Johnson and the Daytona qualifying penalty of a week ago.

"It's not good for the sport," Newman said. "Its not good for any of us to have that question mark out there."

Newman continued, "I say what's on my mind that comes out as the truth. The bottom line is that's the way I've always been. If you ask me a question, I'm going to give you an answer and it might not be the best answer as far as politics go."

Duly noted.

Yep, if today's actual race is half as spirited as the emotions running through the garage area, it should be a heck of a show.

And I can't wait for the post-race interviews.
