It was a tough year for Gordon and his new team in 2005 as he took on the daunting task of being an owner-driver on the NEXTEL Cup circuit. Gordon wound up missing seven races and made 29 starts, scoring a second place finish at Watkins Glen in August, certainly the highlight of his season. His celebrated helmet throwing incident in New Hampshire and subsequent curse on national television may have been Gordon's lowest point of a frustrating season.
A switch to DEI engines at the end of 2005 resulted in two Top 15 finishes for Gordon. The DEI powerplants should help things in 2006, but because he's out of the Top 35 in points, Gordon is going to have to make the early races through qualifying. The talent has always been there and now with the boost in horsepower, Gordon could see a better year ahead. But as always, the temperamental driver is his own worst enemy and keeping his emotions in check will be a key to a better performance on the track.
Race to the Chase
It will be a better season for Gordon but not enough to make the championship season.
