The 1976 Daytona 500 wasn't on network television. Only those who were part of the pay-per-view audiences at movie theaters around the country were able to watch what turned out to be on the classic finishes in the race's history.

Richard Petty and David Pearson crashed while heading to the checkered flag on the last lap. Both cars spun wildly after making contact and came to rest in the infield of the tri-oval.

As Petty tried mightily to refire his STP Dodge, Pearson was able to get his Wood Brothers Purolator Mercury rolling and took the checkered flag at about 20 mph.

Several crewmen helped push Petty across the line, a violation that cost him that lap. He still finished second, but a lap down. Benny Parsons, Lennie Pond, Neil Bonnett and Terry Ryan rounded out the top five.
