Icountdown To Daytona:/I 36 Days

Junior Johnson got an assist from Mother Nature to win the 1960 running of the Daytona 500.

With two laps to go, Bobby Johns was comfortably in the lead and headed to a victory in the second edition of "The Great American Race." Or so he thought.

A freak gust of wind shattered the back window of John's Pontiac as he raced down the backstretch, sending him into a wild spin and narrowly almost into Lake Lloyd.

Johnson raced by and went on to the win with Johns limping home a disappointing second.

Richard and Lee Petty finished third and fourth with Johnny Allen rounding out the Top 5.

After the win, Goodyear sent the blimp out carrying a banner that read "Junior Johnson Wins Daytona 500 on Goodyear Tires." (picture)

But for Bobby Johns, it was anything but a banner day.
