Icountdown To Daytona:/I 55 Days

"Big Bill" France's dream of building a world-class motorsports facility in Daytona Beach, Florida finally came to fruition in 1959. The mammoth Daytona International Speedway opened in February of that year, bringing to life the NASCAR founder's vision of nearly a decade.

After holding races on Daytona's famous beach road course, NASCAR moved to the new 2.5-mile superspeedway with the first Daytona 500 in 1959.
