Icountdown To Daytona:/I 53 Days

With Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough crashing each other on the final lap, Richard Petty took the checkered flag to win the 1979 Daytona 500, the first race televised from flag-to-flag.

The Allison-Yarborough duel ended with both cars crashing as they entered the third turn on the race's final lap. As the wrecked cars sat in the infield, the drivers engaged in a wild fight, as Petty raced across the finish line to end a 45-race winless streak.

Darrell Waltrip, A.J. Foyt, Allison and Yarborough were credited with rounding out the Top 5 finishers.

Petty averaged 143.977 mph before a crowd of 120,000.
