Edwards Eyes The Prize

Pull out every cliche in the book if you like. There's only one race left to use them before the racing season is put into mothballs for nearly three months.

"Anything can happen."

"That's why they play the games (or race the races)."

"He has to give 110 percent."

Any of those would apply to Carl Edwards' chances to win the NEXTEL Cup title.

It may seem unlikely that the first year full-time driver can overcome an 87 point deficit and come from third place in the standings to steal the title from Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, but what about Edwards' year hasn't been unlikely?

His four Cup Series wins? Back-to-back victories at Atlanta and Texas? Five Busch Series wins?

"To say this season has exceeded my wildest dreams would be a bit of an understatement," Edwards said.

So why not put a cherry on that incredible sundae with a championship?

"If we can just go out there and have a good run, we'll let the rest of it take care of itself," he said. "We don't have to create magic this weekend. We just have to go out and have a solid performance."

Edwards has, as he's done all year, kept his perspective on things intact. He knows what he has to do, and just plans to go out and do it.

"I really don't have any option other than just to go out and try to lead the most laps and lead the race," said Edwards. "I can't control how well those other guys run."

Maybe not, but you can be sure those "other guys" will have their eyes peeled for the No. 99 on Sunday.

PISTONE'S PISTONS
All eyes will be on the skies around Homestead-Miami Speedway. The National Weather Service has a 60 percent chance of thundershowers in the forecast for this afternoon, which goes up to 80 percent tonight and back to 60 percent on Monday. The remnants of Tropical Storm Gamma, which has weakened, may still make things damp the next several hours....Dave Blaney has become the leading candidate to take over the Bill Davis Racing Caterpillar Dodge next season, replacing Scott Wimmer as teammate to Michael Waltrip...Bobby Hamilton, Jr. will be out of the Tide Chevrolet after today's Homestead race. The leading replacement? How about Ricky Craven, who left the Cal Wells team to join Jack Roush's Craftsman truck team this year. Craven will not return to the Roush Racing truck stable in 2006 and could be headed back for a reunion with Wells....Regan Smith was named driver of the Rensi Motorsports McDonald's Busch ride for 2006. Jason Keller will leave the team to drive James Finch's No. 01 Busch car in 2006.
