Sorenson Looks For Start

It's only fitting that Reed Sorenson will get his first shot at qualifying for a NEXTEL Cup Series race in the same state in which he cut his teeth in racing.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is special to the Peachtree, Ga. native. It's where Sorenson captured the 1998, 1999 and 2001 track championships in a Legends car and a majority of his 84 wins in the series.

Sorenson, who is scheduled to go out 33rd tonight in qualifying for the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500, will be one of 18 drivers required to qualify on time, that includes the likes of Robby Gordon, Mike Skinner, Johnny Benson, Martin Truex Jr. and J.J. Yeley.

"I am a little nervous for this weekend but I will feel better after qualifying," said Sorenson, who was 22nd and 12th, respectively, in today's practice sessions. "That is always the hardest part when you don't have points and you have to make it in on time."

Sorenson will debut his 2006 Discount Tires Busch Series paint scheme on his No. 39 NEXTEL Cup car under the lights when qualifying begins tonight at 7:10 p.m. (ET) live on SPEED.

After qualifying, hopefully with a spot in Sunday's show, Sorenson will wave the green flag for the first annual Papa John's Invitational Legends race.
