Jack Fires Back

Last week he said it felt like "Get Shorty!" So this week Shorty decided to fire back.

Car owner Jack Roush issued a five page statement Saturday at Lowe's Motor Speedway responding to NASCAR's proposed plan to limit multi-car teams.

"We were taken by complete surprise by their remarks last weekend," said Geoff Smith, president of Roush Racing and the author of the document. "We felt like we wanted to make it an intellectual issue if we were allowed to."

NASCAR CEO Brian France and president Mike Helton told a select group of media members last week at Kansas Speedway that the sanctioning body would soon announce its plans to limit the number of NEXTEL Cup teams an owner can field.

Roush, which has a five car stable of Cup drivers with Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin and Carl Edwards, took issue with the possible limitations.

"I don't know if (the limit) was the purpose of the select media press conference, but it ended up being in there," Smith said. "This is not the normal way for them to deal with policy decisions that would obviously affect us in a great way.

"We have been waiting for something specific and say, 'We're ready for discussion. This is what we see, what do you see?'"

The document states that multicar teams have improved the level of competition in the sport and have given new drivers an opportunity to break into NASCAR racing. It also states that multi-car operations have made it easier for new teams to enter NASCAR competition.

Roush also maintains that potential team restrictions will represent a significant loss to every owner, not just the Roush Racing organization.

NASCAR never mentioned Roush by name in the sanctioning body's comments about the proposed limitations last week, but Smith and the organization feel the finger has been squarely pointed in their direction.

"Is it a coincidence? We don't know," Smith said. "It's just hard to believe that it is."
