Iraceday: California/I

If it's Fontana, it must be Roush Racing time.

Car owner Jack Roush has enjoyed a great deal of success at the two-mile California Speedway over the years, most recently last February when Roush cars swept the Busch-NEXTEL Cup doubleheader with Mark Martin and Greg Biffle driving to victory lane.

The powerhouse got off to a great weekend again on Saturday with Carl Edwards leading a history-making performance that will find four Roush cars making up the first two rows of Sunday's Sond HD 500 line-up.

Roush has four cars currently in the NEXTEL Cup Series Top 10 with Matt Kenseth only eleven out of making it into the "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup." If that happens, half of this year's playoff field will be owned by Roush.

"Well, that's going to be incredible and I think it's going to happen," Martin said. "It's absolutely phenomenal what the 17 bunch has been able to do over the past eight races. They've really turned their season around. We all assist one another and we have not done any more now than we did a year ago right now at the same time.

"I believe that Matt is going to is going to make it in and that's going to be pretty phenomenal to have half of the 'Chase' guys on one team. That's going to be interesting."

DO THE MATH
There are nineteen drivers still mathematically eligible to make this year's "Chase," with only two races left to qualify.

The breakdown of who can clinch and how:

  • Any driver with a lead of 191 points or more following the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway will have clinched a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. (Note: The clinching method used by NASCAR does not assume that a driver will be able to start all of the remaining races, although that is likely.)

  • Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle have clinched spots in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.

  • Rusty Wallace will clinch a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup when he starts the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway.

  • Mark Martin will clinch a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup with a finish of fifth place or better in the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway, no matter where any other competitor finishes. Martin can still clinch if he finishes lower than fifth, as long as his advantage over 11th place is 191 points or greater after the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway.

  • Jeremy Mayfield, Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards have a mathematical chance of clinching a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup in the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway.

  • The maximum point gain that a driver can have in a race over a fellow competitor who also starts that race is 156. Therefore, it is mathematically possible for drivers who are currently in positions 11 through 17 to make it all the way into the top 10 after the Sony HD 500 at California Speedway.

  • At a minimum, at least two spots in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup will be up for grabs going into the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
