Harvick Hustles To Pole

TALLADEGA, Ala. - Kevin Harvick rocketed his Richard Childress Racing GM Goodwrench Chevrolet around Talladega Superspeedway in a lap of 189.804 mph Friday afternoon to claim the pole for Sunday's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Aaron's 499.

Harvick earned his first career Bud Pole at Talladega, where he finished second and third in last year's two NEXTEL Cup Series races.

Harvick became the seventh different driver to win a Bud Pole in 2005.

Harvick posted his third career Bud Pole and his first since Indianapolis 2003, 60 races ago. It is his third Top 10 start in 2005, all in the past four races. Harvick has just three Top 10 starts in nine Talladega races. His previous best start here was second in April 2003.

Defending Aaron's 499 winner Jeff Gordon qualified second and will start his Hendrick Motorsports DuPont Chevy outside row one.

Elliott Sadler, Scott Riggs and Ryan Newman rounded out The Top 5.

Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Rudd, Dave Blaney, Travis Kvapil and Kurt Busch completed the first ten qualifiers.

The DEI duo of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Michael Waltrip, which has dominated the racing at Talladega over the last several seasons, suffered a disappointing qualifying effort. Five-time Talladega winner Earnhardt, Jr. will start Sunday's race 36th while Waltrip lines-up 38th.

Four drivers failed to qualify for Sunday's race; Robby Gordon, Kevin Lepage, Kenny Wallace and Stanton Barrett.

Sunday's Aaron's 499 will take the green flag at 1:15 p.m. (ET) with live television coverage on FOX.
