Michigan Schedule Revamped

Michigan International Speedway will adopt the new NASCAR qualifying procedure in 2005 and hold both NEXTEL Cup weekend times trial sessions on Saturdays while expanding the schedule to include ARCA racing on Fridays.

MIS has its traditional two NASCAR weekend schedule in place this season with a Craftsman Truck Series-NEXTEL Cup doubleheader slated for June 18-19. The Cup Series returns with the Busch Series to the two-mile superspeedway on August 20-21.

The ARCA RE/Max Series will be part of both NASCAR weekends with qualifying and a 200-mile race on the Friday portion of the schedule.

"With the changes in the NASCAR weekend schedules for 2005, MIS will be able to provide more of what fans ask for all the time, more racing at a great value," said MIS President Brett Shelton. "With NASCAR going with new qualifying procedures, it gave us a great opportunity to have races all three days at an attractive price."

Michigan joins Pocono International Raceway and California Speedway as tracks implementing NASCAR's new NEXTEL Cup qualifying procedure. Each track will hold two practice sessions on Friday with qualifying set for Saturday, after which the cars will be impounded by NASCAR officials until Sunday's race. The new system eliminates the final weekend practice session on Saturdays, which has become known as "Happy Hour."

More tracks are expected to adopt the format as the 2005 detailed schedules become available.
