Avondale, Ariz. - Ryan Newman and his ALLTEL team fought back from early race tire issues that left them a lap down to claim second and record their 11th top-five finish this season.

"I never gave up on this team today," Newman said. "I knew we had a fast race car and could bounce back from whatever tire problems we had. Our car and Dale (Earnhardt) Jr.'s car were both really fast. Track position means a lot here, and he just got to it first."

Newman earned his ninth pole, fourth consecutive, of the 2004 season Friday, clinching his third-straight annual Bud Pole Award. Newman has now earned 27 career poles, tying him with Terry Labonte for 23rd on the all-time pole winners list.

Newman took the initial lead in Sunday's race and held it for the first 60 laps before succumbing to a very fast Dale Earnhardt Jr. The ALLTEL/TXT2Win MVP Sweepstakes team made its first pit stop on lap 77 for four fresh tires and minor adjustments to help loosen the car's handling. After restarting the event in second, Newman radioed to crew chief Matt Borland that the car was slightly too loose.

As rain began to fall, threatening a possible rain-shortened race, Newman joined the leaders on pit road once again during a lap 104 caution period. Newman rejoined the field in fourth place, behind three cars that only took right-side tires during their pit stops. Six laps later, however, the field was stopped on pit road and the race put under the red flag as rain continued to fall.

The race resumed approximately 20 minutes later with Newman in fourth. On the restart, the No. 12 ALLTEL/TXT2Win MVP Sweepstakes Dodge severely faltered. Newman radioed that there was a problem with the tires as he entered pit road and he needed right-side tires only. The stop moved Newman to 35th place, one lap down. The caution flag waved once again just one lap later. Borland radioed Newman to come back onto pit road for four fresh tires.

From that point, Newman battled to get back onto the lead lap. During the lap 142 caution period, Newman remained on the track while many of the leaders opted to pit. The decision put Newman on the tail of the lead lap, but he would have to fight to remain there. Newman managed to hold the leaders off. When the next caution occurred, Newman circled around to the tail of the lead pack.

The ALLTEL Dodge was packed with fuel, allowing it to stay on the track longer than most of the field. Newman had moved into eighth-place by lap 225, when yet another caution period occurred.

With four fresh tires and a slight handling adjustment, Newman battled with the top-10 competitors. After moving into third on lap 306, the race's final caution occurred when the No. 41 spun in turn one and the No. 31 lost an engine. NASCAR officials red-flagged the event, leading to a green-white-checkered finish.

In the final two laps, Newman managed to duck below the No. 24 of Jeff Gordon. In turn four of the final lap, Newman got around Gordon to earn the runner-up finish.
