Newman Charlottes Top Gun

CONCORD, N.C. - Ryan Newman turned a lap of 188.877 mph in his ALLTEL Dodge to win the pole for Saturday night's UAW-GM 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Newman's lap set a new track record at Charlotte and he became the first NASCAR Cup Series driver to break the 188 mph barrier.

"That was pretty close to a perfect lap," Newman said after winning his sixth pole of the season. "I told Krissie (Newman's wife) I wanted the record back, and we got great weather and a good lap."

Kasey Kahne qualified second followed by Busch Series pole winner Casey Mears, Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler.

"I wasn't surprised at how fast Ryan went," Mears said. "When they told me what I ran, knowing what Ryan had run in practice in the heat of the day, I didn't think that was going to be good enough."

Michael Waltrip, Kevin Harvick, Joe Nemechek, Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards rounde dout the first ten qualifiers.

Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 will take the green flag at 7 p.m. (ET).
