Sauter Back In Cup

Johnny Sauter will attempt to make his first NASCAR Nextel Cup Series start since Dover in June this weekend in Saturday's Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond Int'l Raceway. Sauter will be driving a Chevrolet from Richard Childress Racing, which is being prepared at the Curb-Agajanian shop in Mooresville, North Carolina.

"I'm still under contract to RCR," said Sauter. "It's an off-site car. We're building it ourselves. It's a Childress effort kind of our way."

The chassis Sauter will race this weekend was his favorite when he drove the No. 30 car at Childress.

"It was a little bit different type of chassis and Richard said go ahead and take that," said Sauter. "We brought it home and we put a body on it. We've done a lot of things to it. It's almost like an R&D piece and that's kind of the way I like to do it. It makes it a lot of fun for me to know that I've got some stuff that's maybe a little bit different than the ordinary. I've had a ton of input and we've put a lot of effort into this thing. We tested at Richmond last week and it was awesome. The car was really good, responded really well and I'm just looking forward to it."

If Sauter can make the field Saturday he hopes a good performance will build into more races this season.

"I'm definitely looking at Loudon, if we get through Richmond unscathed, and then Phoenix," said Sauter. I hope there are a couple more races left after Richmond."

Sauter is scheduled to race the No. 33, which Kerry Earnhardt drives this season, with a sponsorship from Mag-Lite.

Sauter's best Cup finish this season was 14th at Rockingham and Talladega. He did run strong at Indianapolis Raceway Park last month posting runner-up finishes in the Busch and Craftsman Truck Series.

Along with his Cup ride, Sauter will also compete in the Truck race on Thursday and look to defend his win in the Busch event on Friday.
