Farewell Tour

We'll have to wait until 2005 for Rusty Wallace's farewell tour from NASCAR Nextel Cup Series racing. Robby Gordon's started on Sunday.

Gordon's payback strategy for an early-race incident with Greg Biffle turned out to be a damaging blow to the title hopes of Jeremy Mayfield and Tony Stewart. After saying "I'll get him" on his car radio back to his crew, Gordon proceeded to ram into Biffle on lap 64, spinning the No. 16 into Mayfield and Stewart in the aftermath.

"I guess Gordon and Biffle had something going on there. I don't know why they settle this stuff on the race track," Mayfield said. "I guess they're just too scared to settle it outside the race track. It's just a shame for us, we had to get caught up in their mess."

NASCAR parked Gordon on pit road for a two lap penalty after the melee, a ridiculously light punishment for a driver who has a history of similar antics and who single-handedly ruined the championship chances of two drivers.

Gordon then compounded the situation after the race when he pushed a radio reporter out of the way yelling "Get out of here" as he exited his hauler and then made an obscene gesture to the media contingent as he was driven away in a golf cart.

"Robby will have his day," Mayfield said. "I don't know who will do it, but I'm just an innocent bystander here and I'm just voicing my mind."

The prediction here is Robby's day will come but not behind the wheel of a Nextel Cup Series car. Sources are already reporting that Dave Blaney will take over the Richard Childress Racing No. 31 this weekend in Dover and that Gordon will be given his release. RCR was expected to replace Gordon at the end of the year anyway and Sunday's actions more than likely expedited the situation.

Gordon, who owns his own Busch team, will most likely wind up a full-time competitor on the BGN circuit next year.

Busch drivers, you have been warned.
