Dover Handicaps

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- Earnhardt won a Cup race here in 2001 but has been off his feed a little here lately. Prior to his third place finish here in June Earnhardt had missed the top 10 four consecutive times at Dover. Junior has also won two Busch races here, one of them after spinning out trying to enter pit road.

Kurt Busch- In eight Dover Cup starts Busch has scored three DNFs and just one top 10. His average finishing position here is about 23rd.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon has won four times at Dover including three consecutive races back in 1995 and 96. His last win here occurred in 2001. Overall Gordon has eleven top 5 finishes in 23 starts and has six top 10 results in the last eight Cup races at the Monster Mile.

Matt Kenseth- Kenseth made his first Cup start at Dover filling in for Bill Elliott whose father had passed away that weekend. While Kenseth has six top 10 results in eleven starts here oddly enough he's led a grand total of one lap at Dover in a Cup car. Kenseth has also won two Busch races at Dover.

Jimmie Johnson- Johnson won both Dover Cup races in 2002 as a rookie but in his three subsequent starts here he's finished 30th or worse twice. Johnson has led at least one lap in four of his five Dover Cup starts.

Elliott Sadler- Sadler has just one top 10 finish in eleven Dover Cup starts and an averaging finishing position of about 20th here.

Mark Martin- His win here in June was Martin's fourth Dover Cup victory. He normally runs very well here with 21 top 10 finishes in 36 starts. He's led over 1600 laps at Dover.

Tony Stewart- Stewart has won here twice (he swept Dover in 2000) and his record here is nothing less than stellar. He has nine top 5 finishes in eleven Dover starts and has led 1036 laps at Dover in those eleven races. In his last three Cup starts here Stewart has finished fourth, third and second respectively so mathematically he's due a win this weekend.

Ryan Newman- Newman won both Dover races last year and has top 10 finishes in four of his five Cup races at Dover.

Jeremy Mayfield- Mayfield was the runner-up in this race last year but that was one of just four top 5 finishes he's managed here in twenty starts. His eighth place finish here in June was one of six top 10 results in those twenty races.

Jamie McMurray- McMurray's three races at Dover have been unremarkable but decent. He's never finished better than sixth or worse than sixteenth.

Kasey Kahne- Kahne returns to Dover looking for a little justice. He was leading the race here in June when the 41 car blew an engine. NASCAR was slow to throw a caution and Kahne slid in the oil and wrecked. He went on to finish 21st that day. Kahne does have three straight top 10 finishes here in Busch series races.

Kevin Harvick – Harvick has top 10 finishes in four of his seven Dover Cup starts including in the last two. He led 133 laps here on his way to a fourth place finish in this race last year.

Bobby Labonte- Labonte won here back in 1999. Overall he's run fairly well at Dover with eleven top 5 finishes in 24 starts but in the last seven races here he's missed the top 10 six times.

Dale Jarrett – Jarrett won here way back in 1998. DJ also dominated here in 1997 leading 255 laps but he blew an engine. But he's been off song at Dover lately with finishes outside the top 10 in the last three Dover Cup races and in six of the last eight events here.

Michael Waltrip – Waltrip hasn't done too well here. He has just top 5 finishes in 37 starts here with the most recent of them coming back in 1991. He's also failed to finish six of the last fourteen Cup starts here and that can't be good. But there is hope. Waltrip's sixth place finish here in June ended a streak of thirteen consecutive finishes outside the top 10.

Rusty Wallace- Wallace has won here three times, oddly enough in three consecutive races. But the most recent of those wins was in 1994 way back before Michael Waltrip had even filmed his first commercial. Wallace hasn't been doing as well here lately with just three top 10 finishes in the last ten Cup races run here.

Sterling Marlin- Marlin has just two top 5 finishes in 37 starts here with the most recent of those scored in 1990. (Mr. Marlin, meet Mr. Waltrip. Mr. Waltrip, Mr. Marlin.) Marlin's last top 10 here was in this race in 2001.

Jeff Burton- For whatever reason Burton typically runs better at Dover than he finishes and he's been involved in some nasty crashes here. He does have top 10 finishes in three of the last five Dover Cup events including a fourth place result with the struggling 99 outfit in June.

Casey Mears- This place has been a personal Waterloo for Mears with no finishes of better than 28th in his three Cup starts at Dover. Nor has he ever finished better than 22nd in his four Busch starts here. Maybe he should try the trucks?
