Gordon Road Warrior

SONOMA, Calif. - Jeff Gordon scored his fourth career NASCAR Nextel Cup Series pole at Infineon Raceway Friday taking the top spot for the Dodge/SaveMart 350.

Despite a slip off the twisting road course during his qualifying run, Gordon's lap was good enough to earn the four-time Nextel Cup Series champion his second straight pole, following his DHL 400 top spot last week in Michigan. Gordon will now shoot for his fourth career series win at the Northern California road course.

"The track has a lot of grip, Gordon said. "I was really disappointed when I made the run because I felt I left the door wide open for other guys to knock us down the list." .

"The (track) conditions were much trickier than we all anticipated. The wind really kicked up."

Rusty Wallace qualified second with Kurt Busch, Mark Martin and Matt Kenseth rounding out the Top 5.

"I got to sliding too much in Turn 10," said Wallace, who will shoot for his second win of the season on Sunday. "That's where Gordon and (Ricky Craven) went off. I got in pretty hot and it was a long time before it hooked up. I knew it cost me too much time right there."

Scott Pruett in a Ganassi Racing Dodge entry was sixth with Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Joe Nemechek and Bobby Labonte completing the first ten qualifiers.

Sunday's Dodge/SaveMart 350 will take the green flag at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
