Dover Handicaps

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- One of Earnhardt's most memorable victories was in the fall 2001 race here, the first event after the tragedy of 9-11. In three of the four races run here since Earnhardt has finished poorly including in last fall's race where he crashed and finished 37th. Junior did win at Dover in two of his four Busch starts at the track.

Jimmie Johnson- Johnson won both Dover races in his rookie 2002 season after leading 358 of a possible 800 laps, and finished eighth here last fall. He'll be part of it.

Matt Kenseth- Kenseth made his first career Cup start at Dover filling in for Bill Elliott whose father died that weekend and finishing sixth. He has three straight top 10 finishes here going into this weekend and won here twice in the Busch series at the track Kenseth has often described as his best on the circuit.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon has won four Cup races at Dover including three straight in 1995-96, and another win in 2001. He has top 10 finishes in six of the last seven Cup races here including four top 5 finishes.

Tony Stewart- Stewart's record at Dover has been nothing less than phenomenal. He won both races here in 2000, has never finished worse than eleventh in ten Cup starts at Dover and has eight top 5 finishes in those ten starts. His career average Cup finish at Dover is 4.3. Odds on favorite.

Bobby Labonte- Labonte's only Dover Cup victory was scored in this race in 1999 but he's no slouch here with eleven top 5 finishes in 23 career starts. Unfortunately the track hasn't been Bob-a-licous to him lately with three finishes of 30th or worse in the last five races here.

Elliott Sadler- In ten Cup starts here Sadler has just one top 10 finish (tenth in this race in 2000), an average finish of 20th, and has led just two laps. If drivers were racehorses, Sadler would be Smarty-Burgers by now based on his Dover results. .

Kurt Busch- Busch has been qualifying well here lately, but his finishes are nothing too spectacular. He has just one top 10 finish (seventh in the fall of 2002) and an average finish of worse than 24th. Yet, he runs so well at Bristol, another concrete track.

Ryan Newman- Newman's average finish at Dover is even better than Stewart's at Dover; 3.5. He won both races here last year and finished fourth and eighth here in his rookie 2002 season. And yeah, he has one pole here.

Kevin Harvick- Harvick is either hot or cold at Dover in a Cup car. In six starts he has three top 10 finishes (best of fourth in last year's fall race) and three finishes of 27th or worse.

Kasey Kahne- Kahne had a pair of top ten finishes (fourth and eighth) in the two Dover Busch races last year.

Jamie McMurray- McMurray finished sixth in last fall's Dover Cup race.

Rusty Wallace- Wallace has four career wins at Dover but the most recent of those was back in 1994. If you were a fan back then, NASCAR doesn't love you anymore. In forty career Cup starts at Dover, Wallace is batting .500 with twenty top 10 finishes.

Jeremy Mayfield- Mayfield did finish second here last fall, which was far, and away his best ever career finish at Dover. But he has only five top 10 finishes in nineteen Cup starts at Dover. Risky bet but could surprise. Demand hero odds.

Mark Martin- Martin has won here three times, but most recently in 1999 when Brian France was still biting the heads off of live chickens in a carnival freak show. He (Martin not France) has twenty top 10 finishes in 35 starts here, but he's been off his feed a bit here lately with three finishes of eighteenth or worse in his last four Dover Cup starts.

Casey Mears- Mears struggled mightily here last year with 40th and 36th place finishes in the two Dover Cup races. He pretty much stunk up the joint in the Busch series as well, never finishing better than 22 in four Busch starts and never leading a lap.

Dale Jarrett- Jarrett won this race in 1998 and prior to last year he was running pretty well here with eight top 10 finishes in the ten Dover races from 1998 to 2002 (six of those finishes were within the top 5). But last year DJ failed to lead a lap here and finished 39th and eighteenth.

Sterling Marlin- In 36 Cup starts at Dover Marlin has led just 25 laps and managed two top 5 finishes. He's finished 29th or worse in five of the last ten Cup races here. Better get back to Tennessee Jed.

Robby Gordon- Gordon has top 10 finishes in the last two spring Dover Cup races, but earlier in his career he struggled to qualify here.

Ward Burton- This hasn't been a good track for the elder Burton brother. He has just two top 10 finishes and no top 5s in twenty career Cup starts here.

Terry Labonte- Labonte has made fifty Cup starts at Dover but has never won a race here. (His best results were second place finishes in 1984 and 1996 his two championship seasons.) Lately Labonte has struggled here. His tenth place result in this race last year was his first top 10 at Dover since 1998. Don't bet the ranch on the rooster.
