Johnson Rolls On

CONCORD, N.C. - Jimmie Johnson continued his mastery of Lowe's Motor Speedway Sunday night with his second straight victory in the Coca-Cola 600.

Johnson dominated all evening in the Lowe's Chevy leading 334 of the 400 laps en route to his eighth career Nextel Cup win. The win also made for a sweep of the weekend for Team Lowe's at their home track after Kyle Busch, Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, won yesterday's Busch race in the No. 5 Lowe's Chevy.

"That car was so good," said Johnson, who became the first pole-winner to win a Nextel Cup race this season. "We stuck to our game plan all night long and we knew what we needed to do. It all worked out, and that was cool to get the sweep for Team Lowe's."

Michael Waltrip scored his best finish of the season after he came home second in the NAPA Chevy.

"Slugger and the boys have done just a real great job," said Waltrip. "At the start of this year we couldn't find our rear ends. We changed the downforce. We ran in the top five most of the day."

Matt Kenseth finished third with Jamie McMurray and Elliott Sadler completing the top-five.

Series points leader Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was sixth with Casey Mears, Jeremy Mayfield, Tony Stewart and Rusty Wallace rounding out the top-10.

Kasey Kahne finished 12th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the sixth time this season.

Robby Gordon, who had to retire earlier Sunday in the Indianapolis 500 after rain put the race under the red flag 29 laps in, finished 20th in the Cingular Wireless Chevrolet. Gordon was shooting to run the "Holiday double" for the fourth consecutive year, but had to hand over the controls of his No. 70 Meijer Dallara/Chevy to Jaques Lazier so he could board a helicopter to LMS.

Earnhardt Jr. maintains the points lead but Johnson is now just five points behind him in second. Jeff Gordon's 30th place finish allowed Matt Kenseth to overtake him for third place.

The Nextel Cup Series now travels to Dover International Speedway next Sunday for the MBNA America 400.
