FONTANA, Calif. - This time Jeff Gordon's victory wasn't followed by a shower of garbarge from the stands. Gordon won Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup Auto Club 500 at California Speedway, his second-straight victory and third at the the 2-mile speedway.

Gordon was able to outdistance his rivals in a fuel mileage strategy to score his 66th career Nextel Cup Series win and sixth in his home state of California. The Hendrick Motorsports driver piloted his DuPont Chevy to his second consecutive win, following his controversial victory last weekend in Talladega. The California native stretched his fuel as far as he could and combined that strategy with great pit work to make to to victory lane.

"I went to do my burnout and ran out," Gordon said. "We weren't the best car, we weren't even one of the best five yesterday in practice. But we dialed it. The past two weeks have been amazing. When you have a team like this and car like we do, we have momentum. We'll enjoy this one on the off weekend and try to keep that momentum when we come back."

Gordon's Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson was second, coming from the 19th starting position after crashing his primary car in friday's opening practice session.

Ryan Newman was third followed by Matt Kenseth and Bobby Labonte, who was trying to run Gordon down for the win until running out of fuel on the last lap.

"We made up a lot of time," Labonte said. "We didn't miscalculate fuel, we just ran a little faster on the last run."

Rookie Brendan Gaughan, Terry Labonte, Casey Mears, Kevin Harvick and Ward Burton rounded out the top-10.

Gordon jumped up to third in the series point standings behind leader Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Johnson. Kenseth and Terry Labonte round out the first five in the standings.

The Nextel Cup Series takes next weekend off before returning to action at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night, May 15.
