Busch Back At Bristol

No one is more surprised about Kurt Busch's success at Bristol Motor Speedway than, well - Kurt Busch.

"If you had asked me three years ago what my favorite track was, I would never have said Bristol," said Busch, who will shoot for his third consecutive NASCAR Nextel Cup Series win in Sunday's Food City 500. "But now after the success that we've been fortunate enough to achieve here, it's right up there."

Last season Busch became the first driver to sweep both Nextel Cup races at the high-banked half-mile oval since Rusty Wallace turned the trick in 2000. If the No. 97 Sharpie Ford winds up in victory lane again on Sunday, Busch will join an elite group of drivers who have won three-in-a-row at Bristol - Fred Lorenzen, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip.

"Those are big names and I'm real honored to be in that group," Busch said. "There are a lot of names that have driven at Bristol and to win here is one thing, but to be able to win repeatedly requires a full team effort."

Busch's crew chief Jimmy Fennig knows all about Bristol's rough and tumble reputation, but feels confident about his driver's chances this weekend.

"I've been coming here for a long time, but nothing gets you more excited than going to Bristol," Fennig said. "As a crew chief, you're plenty busy and you don't have the luxury of a lot of time before you have to make a call sometimes. Everything happens faster here. Bristol has been good to us the past couple years and we've been needing a Top 5 this year. We'd love for it to happen here."

In the season's first five races, Busch has racked-up three Top 10 finishes but hasn't been able to crack the Top 5. He comes to Bristol fourth in the point standings and off a sixth place finish last Sunday at Darlington, where he led late in the race.

"We've been so close to a Top 5 this year, especially last week at Darlington and we've always had luck in special paint scheme cars here at Bristol," said Busch, who will sport a new look this weekend for sponsor Sharpie. "Hopefully that will be a good omen for us."
