Another Pole For Newman

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Ryan Newman continued his amazing pole run on Friday earning his third of the year in qualifying for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Newman rocketed around the lightning-fast half-mile oval in 14.954 seconds at 128.134 mph to earn his 21st career Nextel Cup Series pole.

Jeff Gordon was second fastest in the DuPont Chevy with a lap of 128.288 mph. Greg Biffle, fresh off his Busch Series pole winning run earlier in the day, was third followed by Rusty Wallace and Kasey Kahne.

Jamie McMurray, who had his primary car impounded by NASCAR after early morning inspection, qualified sixth in his back-up entry. Brendan Gaughan gave team owner Roger Penske three cars in the Top 10 with a seventh place run. Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler and Johnny Sauter rounded out the first ten qualifiers.

Only 44 cars tried to make the 43 car field with Morgan Shepherd failing to qualify for Sunday's race. Several cars spun and made contact with the outside retaining wall during the qualifying session including Joe Nemechek, Ward Burton, Kirk Shelmerdine and Derrike Cope.

Sunday's Food City 500 will start at 1 p.m. (ET) with live television coverage by FOX.
