Rudd Tops Wednesday Session

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Ricky Rudd turned some heads during Wednesday's NASCAR Nextel Cup "Pre-Season Thunder" test session at Daytona Internationals Speedway topping the speed charts and becoming the first driver to crack the 188 mph barrier.

Rudd's quick lap came during the day's afternoon session when his Wood Brothers Racing Motorcraft Ford hit 188.460 mph. "We're definitely real pleased with that," Rudd said. "Gosh, it's been a long time since I've been at the top of the speed chart at Daytona. It's been many years."

John Andretti continued his strong test by becoming the second driver to top the 188 mph mark. Andretti's DEI Chevy was clocked at 188.198 mph.

The Hendrick Motorsports quintet was also strong on Wednesday. Jimmie Johnson, who led Tuesday's session, and Jeff Gordon were first and second in Wednesday's morning session while rookie Brian Vickers and Terry Labonte also were in the Top 10.

The three-day session wraps up at "The World Center of Racing" on Thursday.
