Tribute To A Champion

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - A fitting close to a busy weekend will take place Sunday for three-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip, as the NASCAR Victory Lap tribute program makes its fifth stop at Martinsville Speedway.

Prior to the Subway 400, Waltrip will pace the field in the No. 11 Victory Lap Chevrolet, in a tribute honoring longtime series sponsor R.J. Reynolds and its past champions. It will be Waltrip's second time on the track during the weekend, as he plans to race in Saturday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville, the Advance Auto Parts 200.

Martinsville Speedway was good to Waltrip throughout his 19-year NASCAR Winston Cup career, as 11 of his 84 victories came at the .526-mile short track, including three consecutive in the fall race from 1987-1989. Waltrip -- series champion in 1981, 1982 and 1985 -- picked up his first victory at Martinsville in the spring of 1976. His 84 career victories rank third on the all-time list, tied with Bobby Allison.

Waltrip will also race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Advance Auto Parts 200 on Saturday, in the No. 17 Aaron's Chevy.

Winston Cup qualifying is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. (ET).
