Newman Reels In Another Pole

HAMPTON, Ga. - Ryan Newman won the pole for Sunday's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 after he turned a fast lap of 194.295 mph around the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway.

It was the ninth pole of the season for Newman and the fastest lap turned in Winston Cup racing this season. The last driver to win nine poles in a season was Newman's Penske South Racing teammate Rusty Wallace.

"That was a strong lap," said Newman. "I really like this racetrack. It's been good for me. We've got a good qualifying history here, and our race history isn't bad. We'll do what we can to get the ALLTEL/Mobil 1 Dodge better in race trim, but it sure felt good in qualifying trim. My first lap out on the racetrack, I hit everything right and the balance was right. My second lap, the 6 blew up in front of me, so we couldn't back anything up. The car was really good right off the truck, and that makes it easier for me. It'd be cool to win the Bud Pole Award again, but we're just out there doing the best we can each and every time whether it's in qualifying or in race trim."

Bobby Labonte, who won the spring race at Atlanta, will start outside the second row after his lap of 194.016 mph in the Interstate Batteries Chevy. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Brian Vickers, who takes over the Hendrick Motorsports UAW-Delphi Chevy this weekend, and Bill Elliott round out the Top 5.

Elliott Sadler, Todd Bodine, Joe Nemechek, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick complete the first ten qualifiers.

Series point leader Matt Kenseth leads the six drivers who will use provisionals to start Sunday's race. Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, Scott Wimmer, Ricky Rudd and Ken Schrader will also start from provisional land.

Six drivers failed to qualify for Sunday's race; Jeff Green, Buckshot Jones, Larry Foyt, Mike Wallace, Billy Bigley and Shelby Howard.

Sunday's Bass Pro Shops/MBNA 500 will start at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and be televised live by NBC Sports.
