Newman Express Rolls On

CONCORD, N.C. - Ryan Newman continued his tear on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Thursday night winning the pole for the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway with a lap of 186.657 mph.

Newman earned his eighth Bud Pole of the season and topped the field of 47 cars attempting to make Saturday night's race.

"We unloaded fast," said Newman. "We expected to go really, really fast tonight. We took a fast car and worked on it a bit to keep it going fast. It carried over the momentum from both a mental and physical standpoint."

Jeff Gordon qualified his DuPont Chevrolet outside row one with Jimmy Johnson, Bill Elliott and Kevin Lepage rounded out the Top 5.

Tony Stewart, Elliott Sadler, Todd Bodine, Kevin Harvick and Mike Skinner completed the first ten qualifiers.
