Martinsville Sweep For Gordon

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Jeff Gordon dominated the field on Sunday on his way to his second win of the year at the Martinsville Speedway in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Subway 500.

At the line Gordon's margin of victory was 1.036 seconds over teammate Jimmie Johnson. Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman rounded out the Top 5.

Terry Labonte, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Bill Elliott and Jeff Burton completed the first ten finishers.

Gordon led the final 295 laps and a total of 311 during the 500 lap chase around the .525-mile Martinsville Speedway. He became the fifth driver to sweep both events in one season at the Virginia short track and the first since Rusty Wallace accomplished the feat in 1994. Gordon is also the first driver to sweep both Martinsville races in one season from the pole since Fred Lorenzen in 1964.

"I wish we could race at Martinsville every weekend," said Gordon, who scored his first win of the season since his Martinsville triumph in April. "This team is on top its short-track game so well...and when this car was in clean air it was just a rocket ship."

The Hendrick Motorsports driver scored his fifth straight Top 5 finish and now has compiled eleven Top 5's and fifteen Top 10's at Martinsville Speedway.

The race was slowed by a record 15 caution flags for a total of 117 laps.

Series point leader Matt Kenseth finished 13th at maintain his Winston Cup lead over Harvick, which stands at 240. Earnhardt, Newman, Johnson and Gordon.

The Winston Cup Series now travels to Atlanta Motor Speedway for next Sunday's Bass Pro Shops/MBNA 500.
