Dover Handicaps

Isabel- This weekend’s big winner is likely to be an ill tempered lady that goes by the name of Isabel and apparently will be arriving in the Delmarva Peninsula about the same time the fans’ campers and team transporters will be. Batten down the hatches.

Matt Kenseth- Kenseth started his first career Winston Cup race here filling in for Bill Elliott after Elliott’s dad passed away. He finished sixth that day and had top 10 finishes in his first three starts here including a second place result in June of 00. After that Kenseth went into a slump and missed top 10 finishes in the next four Cup races he ran here, but he’s rebounded with top 10s in the last two Dover races.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- Junior won a very emotional race here back in 2001, the first Cup race run after the 9-11 tragedy. He’s also won here in a Busch car. He’s batting three for seven as far as top 10 Cup finishes here and just missed this June with an eleventh place result.

Kevin Harvick- Oddly enough Harvick scored solid top 10 finishes in his first two Cup starts here, but has missed the top ten in the three Dover races run since.

Jimmie Johnson- Johnson won both Dover Cup races last year as a rookie but crashed here in June and finished 38th. That’ll screw up your average.

Ryan Newman- Newman started from the pole and held off Jeff Gordon to win this year’s June Dover race. He’s finished inside the top 10 in all three of his career Cup starts at Dover.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon has won four times here at Dover, most recently in June of 2001. He was runner up in this year’s June Cup race. He’s got top 10 finishes in nine of the last twelve Cup races here with five of those finishes inside the top 5.

Kurt Busch- Busch is still getting the hang of this place. He has just one top 10 finish in seven career starts here, a seventh place result in this race last year.

Bobby Labonte- Labonte won here in June of 1999. He’d had top 5 finishes in seven straight races at Dover until 2001 and 02 when he missed in all four races. Rebounded with a third place run here in June. His career stats here are 11 top 5 finishes in 21 starts. A good dark horse pick.

Terry Labonte- Labonte has run 49 races at Dover but has never won here, though he finished second here twice most recently in 1996. His tenth place finish here in June was Labonte’s first top 10 at Dover since the June race of 1998.

Michael Waltrip- To put it mildly Dover hasn’t been good to MW. His last top 10 finish here was in June of 1997.

Tony Stewart- Stewart swept both Dover Cup races in 2000. Stewart has never finished worse than 11th here in nine starts and seven of those starts resulted in top 5 finishes. His fourth place finish here in June is a bit deceiving. Stewart had what appeared to be the fastest car that day but was penalized for pitting outside his pit box during the race. If I recall he was less than happy about that.

Robby Gordon- Gordon has top 10 finishes in two of his last three Cup starts at Dover.

Jeff Burton- Burton has never won here but did finish second in the June race of 1998. That was one of just three top 5 finishes Burton has in nineteen Cup starts at Dover.

Rusty Wallace- Wallace has three career Cup wins at Dover but the most recent of them were both races in 1994. His last top 5 finish here was in the June race of 1999. Sixth here in June.

Bill Elliott- Elliott has won four times at Dover but the most recent of those wins was this race in 1990. His second place finish at Dover last June was his first top 5 finish at Dover since 1992.

Mark Martin- Martin leads all drivers in career earnings at Dover and has won here three times. He has fifteen top 5 finishes in 33 starts at the Monster Mile and was runner up in this race last year

Sterling Marlin- Marlin has just three top 10 finishes in the last twenty races at the Monster Mile. His career best finish here is fifth, twice, both times during the 1980s.

Jamie McMurray- McMurray finished thirteenth here in his only Dover Cup start to date.

Elliott Sadler- Sadler has one career top 10 finish in nine starts at Dover

Greg Biffle- Biffle won a Busch race here last year but finished 30th here in the June Cup race.

Others to Watch

Ward Burton- Burton has failed to score a top 5 finish in nineteen Cup starts at the Monster mile. He has just two top 10 results in those same nineteen races.

Ricky Craven- While Craven struggled mightily early in his career at Dover he has top 10 finishes in four of his last five White Lightning starts.

Dale Jarrett- Jarrett won here in 1998 and has fourteen top 10 finishes in his last eighteen starts here. Twelve of those finishes were top 5s.

Ricky Rudd- Rudd is a four time winner at Dover.
