Michigan Handicaps

Matt Kenseth- Kenseth won the June Michigan race in 2002 and finished fourth here this June. He has five finishes of eleventh or better in eight Cup starts at Michigan. Ought to be in the thick of things.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- Junior has won two poles at Michigan, including last August’s race here and has won at Michigan in a Busch car. He’s got a pair of top 10 finishes at this track heading into this weekend including a seventh place result here in June.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon has won at Michigan twice, most recently in 2001. Currently has nine top 5 finishes in the last thirteen Cup races here including a third here in June.

Jimmie Johnson- Johnson is one for three as far as top 10s in Michigan Cup races with a seventh place finish in this race last year. Sixteenth here in June.

Kevin Harvick- Harvick finished third in this race last year to score one of his two top 10 finishes in five races he’s run in a Cup car at Michigan.

Michael Waltrip- Waltrip has finished fourth and fifth in the last two Michigan races and won the Busch event here last August.

Bobby Labonte- Labonte has won at Michigan three times and finished second here in June to end a streak of four straight Michigan races outside the top 10.

Kurt Busch- Busch struggled in his first three starts here with a pair of 43rd place finishes and a 39th place result. But he finished tenth here in this race last year and won here in June so I guess he’s getting the hang of it.

Ryan Newman- Newman had top 5 finishes in his first two Cup starts at Michigan but finished 31st here in this race last year and cooked an engine here in June resulting in a 41st place finish.

Robby Gordon- Wallace averaged a 27th place finish here last year and finished 22nd here in June.

Tony Stewart- Stewart won the June race here in 2000 and finished second here last August. Eighth here in June.

Rusty Wallace- Wallace is a five time Cup winner in the Irish Hills, most recently in the 2000 running of this event. But that was his only top 5 finish in the last thirteen Cup races run here. Wallace finished twelfth here in June.

Jeff Burton- Burton is eight for nineteen as far as top 10 finishes here with a best result of third. Just missed a top 10 finishing eleventh here in June.

Terry Labonte- While Labonte has never won here he has finished second three times in the Irish Hills. His tenth place result here in June was his first top 20 finish at Michigan since 1998.

Mark Martin- Martin is a four time Cup winner at Michigan. Even more impressive is the fact Martin has 24 top 10 finishes in 35 starts here including a ninth place result this June.

Bill Elliott- Elliott used to own this joint and has won seven races at Michigan, more than any active driver. He was 29 top 10 finishes in 51 starts here and leads all active drivers in career earnings at Michigan as well. 24th here in June.

Sterling Marlin- Marlin returned Dodge to victory lane here in 2001. His sixth place finish here in June was one of eleven top 10 results in 34 starts at Michigan.

Ricky Craven- While historically Craven has struggled here, he did finish a strong second place in this race back in 2001.

Ricky Rudd- Rudd won the Michigan June race back in 1993.

Ward Burton- Burton has just one top 5 finish in nineteen starts at Michigan. Hasn’t finished in the top 20 in his last five outings here.

Elliott Sadler- Sadler wasn’t able to take advantage of that Yates engine under the hood this June. He finished seventeenth.

Greg Biffle- Biffle ran very well here in the truck and Busch series, but struggled to a 31st place finish here in June running a Cup car at Michigan for the first time. Failed to qualify for this race last year.

Others To Watch

Dale Jarrett- Jarrett won this race last year, one of four victories he’s had at Michigan dating back to his first ever Winston Cup win back in 1993. DJ has only missed a top five finish at Michigan four times in the last thirteen races here. (Which includes his 32nd place result here in June.)
