DAYTONA BEACH - Steve Park scored his 4th career NASCAR Winston Cup Series pole Thursday night putting the America Online Chevrolet at the top of the charts for Saturday night's Pepsi 400 at the Daytona International Speedway.

"I'm just ecstatic," said Park. "We haven't had the season that we wanted to have. We had a lot of highs and a lot of lows. It feels so good. I am so happy to be at Richard Childress Racing."

Park won his first official pole since joining Richard Childress Racing with a lap of 184.752 mph. Park won the pole for Winston Open at Lowe's Motor Speedway back in May in his first time driving the No. 30 AOL Chevrolet for RCR, and captured the pole at California in April in the No. 1 DEI Pennzoil Chevrolet.

This was the second consecutive pole for the AOL Chevrolet at Daytona. Jeff Green won the pole for the team in February.

Park's RCR teammate Kevin Harvick will start along side of the No. 30 when the Pepsi 400 takes the green flag Saturday night.

"The fab shop has really done a great job, the engine shop has done a lot of extra work, and the teams, both of these teams, have really worked hard," said Childress.

Jeff Gordon, driving a special paint scheme that showcases the cool $1 billion that Pepsi is offering up in a current promotion will start third after turning a lap of 184.498 mph around the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

"We were pretty satisfied with that," said Gordon. "I was pretty shocked that we held onto the top spot as long as we did. We knew that the Childress cars would be a factor. Going into the day, we thought we'd be a little bit better than we were at Talladega. We were fourth at Talladega and we came out of here third, so we're pretty happy."

Heading into the tonight's qualifying session, Gordon lead all active drivers who have 10 or more starts at Daytona, with a 9.76 average starting and 14.5 average finishing position. In fact, Gordon's six restrictor-plate wins are the most of any active driver.

Sterling Marlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the Top 5.

Those notable that will start in the back of the pack are Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Jeff Green and Ward Burton. Rusty Wallace, Kyle Petty and Matt Kenseth, the Series point leader, had to use a provisional to get into the field.

Two of the Petty cars, the No. 44 of Christian Fittipaldi, and the No. 43 of Shane Hmiel failed to make the field along with Tony Raines and Kerry Earnhardt.

Saturday's Pepsi 400 will take the green flag at 7 p.m. (ET) and will be televised by NBC.
