Sweet Run For Sadler

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Elliott Sadler scored his first career NASCAR Winston Cup Series pole position on Friday putting the M&M's Ford at the top of the charts for Sunday's Carolina Dodge Dealers 400.

Ryan Newman, Jerry Nadeau, Jimmy Spencer and Jeff Gordon rounded out the Top 5.

"What a great day and what an awesome car we had today," said Sadler, who joined the Robert Yates Racing team this season. "I can't thank Robert and Doug Yates enough for this opportunity and we really are pumped for Sunday."

Sadler's run of 170.147 mph was nearly a mile per hour quicker than second fast Newman.

The pole run came in Sadler's 146th career Winston Cup event where the young Virginian scored a runnerup finish in last year's Carolina Dodge Dealers 400.

Kurt Busch, Ward Burton, last year's race winner Sterling Marlin, Michael Waltrip and Todd Bodine completed the first ten qualifiers.

With only 43 cars entering the event, everyone who took part in Friday's session will start Sunday's race. Those notable in the back of the pack are two-time Darlington winner Jeff Burton and this year's Rockingham race winner Dale Jarrett.

Sunday's Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 will take the green flag at 1 p.m. (ET) and be televised by FOX.
