Newman Dials Up Pole

HAMPTON, Ga. - Ryan Newman scorched the Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday afternoon with a lap of 191.417 mph to win the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup Series MBNA Bass Pro Shops 500. Fellow Dodge driver and homestate favorite Bill Elliott qualified second.

"Elliott came close, but I'm happy we get to start out front," Newman said. "The track was green when we went out this morning in practice and the conditions were better to be fast."

Elliott Sadler, Bobby Labonte and Jimmy Spencer rounded out the Top 5 followed by series point leader Michael Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch and Jeremy Mayfield.

Newman's ALLTEL Dodge led another strong performance by the manufacturer which includes front row mate Elliott and a total of four Intrepids in the Top 10.

"The car handled well during the run but we weren't able to get enough out of the car to get the pole," said Elliott. "But it's good to be upfront and nice to have an all-Dodge front row.

Newman, who led the series in pole positions in his rookie season a year ago, captured his eighth career top spot.

It was a rough day for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who has to use a provisional to start 37th on Sunday after spinning out during his qualifying lap. Kyle Petty, Terry Labonte, Larry Foyt, Ken Schrader and Jack Sprague also used provisionals to make the field.

Two drivers didn't make the race, Jeff Fultz and Bobby Hamilton, Jr.

Sunday's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 takes the green flag at 1 p.m. (ET) and will be televised by FOX.
