Las Vegas Handicaps

Tony Stewart – In four Cup starts at Vegas, Stewart has a pair of top 5 finishes with a best result of second back in 2000.

Mark Martin – In addition to winning the inaugural Las Vegas Cup event, Martin has also finished third here two times. He was sixth and tenth in the other two Vegas Cup events, so he is a safe pick this weekend.

Kurt Busch – Busch is a Las Vegas native but hasn’t given his home crowd much to cheer about with a 11th and 20th place finish. But this is a Roush track (Roush cars have won three of the five Vegas Cup races run) and the Fords should be strong. Good safe dark horse pick.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon is the only Chevrolet pilot ever to win at Las Vegas. (2001) and he finished third here in 1999, but Gordon’s other three finishes have been 17th, 28th and 17th. It’s feast or famine for Jeff Gordon in Lost Wages.

Jimmie Johnson – Johnson finished sixth here last year as a rookie. Keep an eye on this lad. If he finishes better than that this year and celebrates too hard he might end up married to a stripper by midnight.

Ryan Newman- Newman finished fourth here as a rookie last year. Can he roll the dice and win this weekend as easily as he rolled the Dodge and lost at Daytona?

Rusty Wallace- Does anyone remember Rusty Wallace crashed on lap eight at Las Vegas in 2000 and finished dead last. I’m sure Rusty does. Wallace’s best finish here was third in the first Vegas race.

Matt Kenseth- Kenseth really hasn’t had a good finish at Vegas yet with a best result of 14th in 2000 his rookie season. But he does have the Roush factor on his side.

Dale Jarrett- Jarrett finished second to Jeff Gordon back in 2001. DJ has finished in the top ten here in the last three Cup races at Vegas. Has momentum on his side.

Ricky Rudd- Rudd’s best finishes at Vegas are a pair of 12ths and a 13th.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- Junior surprised a lot of people by finishing tenth here in 2000, his rookie season. Missed the top 10 in both Vegas races he’s run since.

Jeff Burton- Burton is the only two time Vegas Cup series winner to date. (1999 and 2000) He also finished second here in the 1998 race and 9th here last year. Burton has been winless since Phoenix in 2001 and this is as good a chance as he’ll get to end the streak this season. My dark horse pick.

Bill Elliott- Elliott has three top 10 finishes in five Cup races at Vegas. Another good dark horse pick because the season has started on a bad note for Bill and Ray.

Michael Waltrip- Dear Mr. Helton, As you know I am still looking for my first top 10 at Vegas and I’ve struggled here immensely. (That’s a word, right?) My teammates are beginning to laugh at me because I’ve never done better than 13th here. The speeds at Vegas are scary fast, so might I suggest we start using restrictor plates here? Love always, Mikey.

Ricky Craven- The Tide bunch might as well save the diesel fuel money and stay home. So far Craven’s finishes at Vegas are 27th, 39th, 40th, 31st and 41st. That’s an average of approximately 36th place in five races.

Bobby Labonte- In five starts at Vegas, Labonte’s best results are a pair of fifths. 29th here last year. That’s a no good.

Jeff Green- Green finished fifth here in the Busch race last year.

Sterling Marlin- Marlin won last year’s Las Vegas Cup race and finished third here in 2001. His other three finishes at Vegas were all outside the top 15.

Dave Blaney- Blaney has struggled here, but if the team can keep up the momentum from Rockingham anything can happen.

Robby Gordon – 37th and 34th at Vegas in the last two races. And that’s the name of that tune.

Others To Watch

Jimmy Spencer- Spencer finished 10th at Vegas last year.

Johnny Benson- Benson finished a credible fourth here in 2001.
