Fittipaldi Finishes 35Th In Daytona 500

And finally, the rains came again and they stayed. Thus ending the 45th running of the Daytona 500, 91 laps shy of full distance. Christian Fittipaldi was in 35th position at the time and that is where he was credited with finishing. Thus ending a 17 day period where Fittipaldi raced 3 times in 3 different cars in 3 different series at the same track with 2 different configurations. The final race he was driving for Andy Petree racing and the #33 Monaco Coaches Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

"The 500 was a great way to finish these last three weeks," said Fittipaldi. "It was pretty awesome to race out there with those guys. The car was good and I learned a lot about drafting. I think if we had gone the distance I could have moved up. The car was better than a 35th place car."

"It's a shame we lost a lap early on. We had a small problem and I had to come in under green, but still I'm very thankful to Andy (Petree) and Monaco Coaches for giving me this chance. I wish another Daytona 500 could start all over again tomorrow."

Fittipaldi is driving stock cars full-time in 2003, driving the #43 Dodge Intrepid for Kyle Petty Racing in selected ARCA events. He will race the #44 Dodge for Petty Enterprises in races that have yet to be determined.

"It's very nice to be together with these guys. I'm pretty sure that I will be able to learn a lot. With what I did in my past racing, there's a lot that I can bring over with me, but there's a lot that's completely new to me and I have to learn. I'm competing against guys that have been doing this for 15, 20 years, so I'll try and cut that down as quick as possible and try to be really competitive. Sometimes it's hard, but we did a decent job today and kept the car in one piece."

Fittipaldi started his 2003 season with a drive in the new No. 54 Doran JE 4 Daytona Prototype for Bell Motorsports in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Then followed that up with a tenth place finish in the Advance Auto Parts 200 ARCA event on the Daytona oval. Then the Daytona 500 in a Winston Cup Chevrolet. 3 races, 3 different cars in 3 different series at the same track with 2 different configurations.

Fittipaldi has enjoyed success in open-wheel racing, with three seasons in Formula One, victories in the CART Championship Series and a second-place finish in the Indianapolis 500.
