Burton Rolls To Vegas

With a combined four wins (2 Winston Cup and 2 Busch), seven top-five (3 Winston Cup and 4 Busch), and nine top-10 (4 Winston Cup and 5 Busch) finishes along with one Busch pole, some might argue that Jeff Burton is the most successful NASCAR driver at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Burton, driver of the No. 99 CITGO Ford, will try to add to the win column this weekend when he runs both the No. 9 and No. 99 CITGO Ford’s in the Busch and Winston Cup races respectively.

“I really like Las Vegas,” said Burton. “I’m looking forward to running both the No. 9 and No. 99 CITGO cars this upcoming weekend. This CITGO team has been working round the clock on this program and we are certainly ready for a win. We hope to accomplish that this weekend.”

Burton has run both the Busch and Winston Cup cars at Las Vegas since it opened in 1998. He holds the record for most wins (2), most laps led (204), most laps led by a race winner (111) and is tied with Mark Martin for most Winston Cup top 5’s (3). When asked about his accomplishments at the track, Burton cannot explain why exactly he and his team have been successful.

“We’ve definitely had success in Vegas,” said Burton. “But to be honest, I don’t know why. I immediately liked the racetrack the first time I ran there and that means a lot. There are several different grooves to run on and I’m a driver that likes to run where the car works best, it doesn’t matter to me whether I’m running, high, low or in the middle. I think this versatility is one key to my successes at this track.”

Burton’s first Cup outing was a close one, as teammate Mark Martin beat out Burton for the win in the tracks closest margin of victory, just 1.065 seconds. This second place finish was merely a small stumbling block because in 1999 Burton took home the win. In 2000 he repeated as the winner and also proved he was the king of Las Vegas. In just two days, Burton swept the Busch and Cup races in addition to winning $1 million for himself and Joyce Williams as a Winston No Bull 5 competitor.

This weekend will mark Burton’s sixth visit to the track for a race weekend. He’s hoping to hit the jackpot and start adding some wins into the win column once again. If the last five years are any indication, Burton could hit ‘the big one’ this weekend.
