Petty Fastest On Thursday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kyle Petty finished NASCAR Winston Cup Series pre-season testing on top of the speed charts on Thursday as the veteran rocketed his Georgia Pacific Dodge around the 2.5-mile superspeedway at a lap of 183.733 mph to complete the series winter testing.

"We were pretty decent," Petty said. "We've been a solid top-10 car ever since we've been here. (Wednesday) when the wind was blowing real strong, we picked up some stuff aero-wise and picked up a couple of things engine-wise.

Petty's run came in the morning session while
Jeremy Mayfield was fastest in the afternoon with a speed of 183.688 mph, second-quickest on the day. Ricky Craven was third at 183.501, followed by Sterling Marlin fourth at 183.434 and Dale Earnhardt Jr. fifth at 183.411. Thursday's top 10 was rounded out by Jack Sprague, David Green, Jeff Gordon, Joe Nemechek and Ryan Newman.

The top lap of the two week session belonged to Mike Wallace at184.053 mph last week with Mike Skinner second-fastest at 183.786

A two-hour drafting session was part of Thursday's activities and Kenny Wallace in the Bill Davis Racing Dodge led the way at 185.801 followed by Jeff Green at 185.785 and Ward Burton third at 185.728.
