Putnum Joins Pettys As Crew Chief

Gary Putnum has been named as crew chief for Petty Enterprises’ No. 44 Dodge and driver Jerry Nadeau.

Putnum replaces Greg Steadman, who has been moved to Manager of Shop Operations.

“The opportunity to bring a talent like Gary into a leadership position and further organize what we are doing at the race shop at the same time was too good to pass up,” Petty Enterprises CEO Kyle Petty said. “Greg Steadman suggested we look at this kind of setup, and when we saw we could add Gary to that mix, we went for it.

“This is the kind of move that might not seem as big as it is. This is a major positive move for Petty Enterprises, and one that will help us as we continue to move forward with our organization.”

Putnum comes to Petty Enterprises from MBV Motorsports, where he served as car chief for Johnny Benson.

“The Pettys are tradition, and that tradition is of being winners and being champions,” Putnum said. “They have never stopped doing what it takes to make it back to the top, and that is what I want to help do with this Georgia-Pacific team.

“This is a pretty special opportunity to serve as crew chief for Petty Enterprises. It is a great organization with a lot of exciting things happening right now. I am honored to have my first chance to become a crew chief come here. There is no doubt that Petty Enterprises is changing, and like myself is 100 percent committed to improving its teams.”

Steadman started the year as John Andretti’s crew chief but was moved to the No. 44 in early June. Part of his new duties will include overseeing the day-to-day activities of all three cars’ preparation in the shop in Level Cross, N.C.
