More Trouble For Stewart

The allegations against Tony Stewart's physical tangles keep coming. The latest comes from Phil Jewett, an emergency medica technician at New Hampshire International Speedway, who now says Stewart punched him.

Jewett told the Concord Monitor that the driver hit him two months ago after crashing out of the New England 300.

NASCAR says it spoke with the EMT a day after the race and could find no evidence to support Jewett's claim.

''It's a closed issue,'' said vice president Jim Hunter.

Stewart's public relations spokesman Mike Arning said the driver would not comment.

Jewett told the newspaper that Stewart refused help from medical team after crashing July 21. EMTs help a driver exit a wrecked car and escort them to an ambulance or the track's medical care facility.

''As soon as he saw me in the corner of his eye, he swung at me and hit me in the left arm,'' Jewett said. ''I was pretty shocked.''

Jewett said he was miffed at NASCAR because president Mike Helton did not get back to him with a status report. But the sanctioning body never promised to do so after Helton and Winston Cup series director John Darby spoke to Jewett, Hunter said.

''They did view some videotape,'' Hunter explained. ''Mike said it was sort of inconclusive, and told the EMT they would have a conversation with Tony.

''Mike said in his mind he did not lead the EMT to believe that he was going to get back with him.''

Arning said he would not discuss the story with the driver until after Sunday's race.

''We're fifth in points and we want Tony to focus on the race,'' Arning said.

Stewart, was fined $10,000 and placed on season-long probation by NASCAR, and fined $50,000 by his sponsor for punching a photographer on Aug. 4 in Indianapolis. He also is being investigated by the Sullivan County sheriff's department in Tennessee after a fan accused him of shoving her up against a trailer after a race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 24.
