NASCAR Boasts Strong Pigskin Team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Joe Gibbs is the “coach” and Terry Bradshaw is on the “roster.”

And that’s just the beginning, for the “2002 NASCAR Preseason All-America Football Team,” a lineup of former professional, collegiate and high school players who have become part of America’s fastest-growing sport.

NASCAR’s football team can boast a total of nine Super Bowl championships. Gibbs, currently a team owner in NASCAR’s three national series, won three Super Bowls while coaching the Washington Redskins; Bradshaw, part-owner of a NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National operation, quarterbacked the Pittsburgh Steelers to four world titles; and place-kicker Mike Cofer, a Late Model driver in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge, was a part of two titles with the San Francisco 49ers.

Gibbs also has reached NASCAR’s pinnacle. In 2000, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Labonte captured the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship. All-America team member Dale Jarrett, an all-star option quarterback in high school, won the 1999 championship.

All three of NASCAR’s national series (NASCAR Winston Cup, NASCAR Busch and NASCAR Craftsman Truck) are represented on the All-America team. The team also has players from some of the nation’s premier collegiate conferences, including the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Pac-10 and Conference USA.

Other team highlights:

* Three NASCAR Winston Cup drivers - Jarrett, Sterling Marlin and Kyle Petty - who were all outstanding high school quarterbacks.

* A 10-year NFL defensive-line veteran in Tim Goad, now a jackman for the No. 36 M&M’s Pontiac team in NASCAR Winston Cup.

* A “front office” that features eight-time All-Pro linebacker Les Richter, a former NASCAR vice president, as the team’s “Executive Vice President” and Lowe’s Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler, a standout high school player, as the “Promotions Director.”
