Hubert Subs For Stricklin At The Glen

You’re out of the Winston Cup championship chase, you’re going to a road course, so why not get yourself a road-racing specialist to drive your car?

That’s what Bill Davis has done for his No. 23 Hills Bros. Coffee Dodge. Tom Hubert, a prolific road racer, will pilot the No. 23 Dodge in this weekend’s Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen at Watkins Glen International. He’ll serve as a one-race substitute for regular driver Hut Stricklin.

Hubert is already an employee at Bill Davis Racing, so Davis is well aware of Hubert’s road racing skills. Hubert serves as a general mechanic for both Ward Burton’s No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge and Stricklin’s No. 23 Dodge on the weekend. Hubert also assits as a test driver for Bill Davis Racing.

Tommy Baldwin, crew chief for Burton’s car, will take Hubert’s place as tire changer on the No. 22 car while Hubert is driving the No. 23 car this weekend.

“Tom is a great race car driver and an exceptional road course racer,” Davis said. “Tom did a great job in our Busch car a few years ago. We wanted to give Hills Bros. Coffee the best shot that we could at getting a win this weekend and we put together the best plan possible, which is having Tom drive the car. I’m really appreciative of Hut being gracious and stepping aside this weekend, with the goal of gaining the most points
possible and having a good run.”

Hubert has extensive road course experience, including leading laps at Watkins Glen in the Busch Series event in 2000.

“I’m really happy Bill is giving me a shot to drive this weekend,” Hubert said. “I’m glad to be able to do what I can to help the team have a strong road course race. I do want to be able to have a great run and hopefully make people aware of my driving ability. Bottom line, this is a team sport and I’m glad to be able to have the chance, in whatever role, to get this car to victory lane.”

The team recently tested at Virginia International Raceway (a road course) prepare for Watkins Glen.

“We mainly worked on the brake program, and I feel that should help both teams,” Hubert said.
