Cup Busch Schedules Released

NASCAR released the 2003 Winston Cup and Busch Series schedules Monday afternoon, with no major changes to either slate for next season.

The Winston Cup schedule again includes 36 races, including the same 20-week stretch to close the season that has been on the schedule since last year. No track had a race added, much to the dismay of Texas Motor Speedway, and no track had a race taken away, much to the delight of tracks like Darlington, Rockingham and others who have been rumored to be losing an event.

The season’s first race, as it has been since 1982, will begin with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 16. It will conclude at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 16 – just like this year.

In between, the only minor changes were three one-week date swaps, the Texas date moving up a week and the move of the fall race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway to Saturday night.

The Winston all-star race was not on the schedule, but there is an open weekend in May for it. That date and location will be announced Wednesday, and it is believed to remain at LMS.

Texas Motor Speedway’s race will be moved up a week to March 30. This year, teams got a week off before going to Texas, which suffered through a weekend of rain.

Talladega moves up a week to follow Texas, swapping positions on the schedule with Martinsville. After Martinsville on April 13, teams get a week off before heading to California Speedway on April 27.

The second Talladega race was moved, too, swapping positions with Kansas Speedway. Talladega will now use the last weekend in September, with Kansas getting the first weekend in October.

The final switch is with Phoenix International Raceway and North Carolina Speedway. Rockingham will now get the penultimate race on Nov. 9, with Phoenix moving up a week to Nov. 2.

The Winston Cup Series visits 23 tracks in 19 states.

The Busch Series will again have 34 races, beginning at Daytona on Feb. 15 and ending at Homestead on Nov. 15.

The one big switch was New Hampshire International Speedway and Gateway International Raceway swapping dates. The NHIS race moves to July 9 to run in conjunction with the Winston Cup event, while Gateway gets a May 10 date – where the series should get cooler weather.

There were two other swaps, both one week. Talladega moves up a week, kicking Nashville back one. And Rockingham moves to the penultimate race, moving Phoenix ahead one week.
