Ganassi, which fields Dodges for Winston Cup Series points leader Sterling Marlin and for Jimmy Spencer, will also field a Dodge for Scott Pruett for the Aug. 11 Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen road course race at Watkins Glen International.
Rumors have circulated about Ganassi’s expansion to a full-time three-car operation with Ricky Rudd as the driver of a third car, but that’s just speculation. Pruett’s deal is a reality, and he’ll drive for Ganassi for the second time during his career.
Pruett, known for his past road racing prowess, subbed for Jason Leffler in the No. 01 Dodge last season at Watkins Glen and drove to a very respectable 11th-place finish at the 2.45-mile road course.
Whether or not the car will have a sponsor has yet to be determined, as is the number of the car.
In 2001, Pruett drove Kevin Lepage's No. 71 Chevy in the GNC Live Well 200 Busch Series race at Watkins Glen. He set a track qualifying record of 121.062 mph, and finished eighth in that event.
Pruett has one full season of NASCAR Winston Cup experience under his belt, racing in 2000 for PPI Motorsports in its first season in the NASCAR Winston Cup series. His best finish was 10th place in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
