Jarrett RYR Docked 25 Points

For the second time in three races, a NASCAR Winston Cup driver and team were docked points for a rules violation. Monday, NASCAR penalized Dale Jarrett and car owner Robert Yates 25 points after Jarrett’s car was found to be under the minimum height requirement in the New England 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Also, crew chief Todd Parrott was fined $25,000 for the violation. The No. 88 team was penalized under Section 12-4-T of the 2002 Winston Cup rule book: “Any car that is found to be under the specified height requirement after the completion of time trials, qualifying races, or the race.”

NASCAR said Jarrett’s Ford was approximately one-eighth of an inch under the minimum height of 51 inches.

Jarrett had finished third in Sunday’s race after leading late in the event. He remained in 11th place in the Winston Cup points standings but fell 345 points behind leader Sterling Marlin.

After the Pepsi 400 two races ago, Chad Knaus, crew chief for Jimmie Johnson, was fined $25,000 for having offset mounting bolts on the car’s trailing arms. Johnson and his No. 48 team were also docked 25 driver and owner points.

The last time a car was found to be too low was at the Coca-Cola 600 in May, when Mark Martin’s car also came up 1/8th-inch too low. Martin’s crew chief, Ben Leslie, was fined $50,000 but the team lost no points. That fine was $20,000 stiffer than one Robbie Reiser, crew chief for Matt Kenseth, was hit with after Kenseth’s car was too low after winning at Rockingham.

NASCAR stepped up its penalties to include points to try to further discourage rules violations, intentional or not.

Both Robert Yates Racing crew chiefs were penalized Monday. Michael McSwain, crew chief for Ricky Rudd, was fined $500 for having an unapproved jacking bolt. There were no points penalties for Rudd.
