Fine Day For Cup Crew Chiefs

NASCAR officials were busy Wednesday. Very busy.

The sanctioning body handed down fines to no less than eight crew chiefs for infractions incurred this past weekend at Daytona International Speedway. Seven Winston Cup Series and one Busch Series crew chief were hit in the pocketbook, while one team was hit in the Winston Cup points standings.

Chad Knaus, crew chief for the No. 48 Chevy driven by Jimmie Johnson, received the most severe penalty. Knaus was fined $25,000 and his team was also penalized 25 championship points and team owner points for offset mounting bolts for the front of the truck trailing arms of the No. 48 Chevy.

Even with the loss of points, Johnson, a rookie, remained third in the Winston Cup standings after 17 races, 139 points behind leader Sterling Marlin. He is, however, now only five points ahead of fourth-place Rusty Wallace and 11 points ahead of fifth-place Jeff Gordon.

Scott Eggleston, crew chief of the No. 33 Chevy driven by Mike Wallace and Jimmy Elledge, crew chief of the No. 55 Chevy driven by Bobby Hamilton, both of Andy Petree Racing, were fined $500 each under section 20-2-E of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series rulebook that states: “Underpans will not be permitted.”

Newt Moore, crew chief of the No. 36 Pontiac driven by Ken Schrader, James Ince, crew chief of the No. 10 Pontiac driven by Johnny Benson and Lee McCall, crew chief of the No. 40 Dodge driven by Marlin, all received fines for unapproved jacking bolts. Chris Carrier, crew chief of the No. 4 Chevy driven by Mike Skinner, was also fined $500 for illegal magnetic rear axle heating pads.

The Busch Series was not immune to NASCAR’s wrath on Wednesday as Jason Ratcliff, crew chief of the No. 27 Pontiac driven by Jamie McMurray, was fined $2,000 for an unapproved rear spring.”
