Inotes:/I Said Gets Another Shot

Boris Said, who drove for Jasper Motorsports in the two NASCAR Winston Cup road races last season, will be behind the wheel of a second Jasper entry in the Sears Point and Watkins Glen races in 2002.

Said will drive the No. 67 Ford as a teammate to Jasper’s regular driver, Dave Blaney, the team announced Thursday.

“These Winston Cup races are like Christmas to me, they only come once or twice a year,” Said said. “I’m like a little kid. I’ve been waiting all year to get back into one of these cars and I’m ready. Last year, I had my best two Winston Cup finishes with Jasper Motorsports. We’re looking to build on that.”

Said finished 11th at Sears Point and eighth at Watkins Glen. He’s driven in five Winston Cup races, four on road courses, and he qualified second at Watkins Glen in 1999 in one of Ken Schrader’s Winston Cup cars.

He leads the SCCA Trans-Am series points standings, having won two of the first three races. Said will also drive in the NASCAR Southwest Tour event at Sears Point in a Schrader car.

Said’s first Winston Cup race is next weekend at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., and he’ll also drive the car at Watkins Glen International. Mark Harrah, one of three co-owners of Jasper Motorsports, will be Said’s crew chief. The pit crew will be made up of Jasper shop employees.

“Boris is regarded as one of the best drivers in road course racing,” Harrah said. “He drove the Jasper Ford to two very solid finishes last year, and we believe that he is capable of winning a Winston Cup race. We tested with both Dave and Boris at Virginia International Raceway in May, and the two of them worked well together. As teammates they can share their individual strengths at the track, Boris as a road course expert and Dave as a Winston Cup Series regular.”

Said’s car will be sponsored by Jasper Engines & Transmissions, but the team is looking for associate sponsor.

Commission Lessens Lambert Fine
The National Stock Car Racing Commission cut $5,000 off the fine NASCAR had levied against Tony Lambert, crew chief for the No. 54 Team Bristol Motorsports car driven by Kevin Grubb, for an infraction at the CarQuest 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last month.

NASCAR fine Lambert $22,500 after post-race inspection found that Grubb’s car was about ¼ inch below the minimum height requirement. Lambert and the team appealed, saying the infraction was inadvertent because a part failed.

Oddly, the commission recently denied a similar appeal from Fred Wanke, crew chief for Bobby Hamilton Jr. Wanke used the same argument for a similar infraction, but his penalty stood.

No explanation for why Lambert’s penalty was given, other than Lambert “made a compelling argument that Team Bristol Motorsports has a long-standing record of adherence to the rules and that the infraction was inadvertent. The Commission found the Appellant’s arguments to be succinct and believable.”

Junior one of ‘Most Eligible Bachelors’
Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s popularity and exposure keeps rising. This week, Junior will appear in People Magazine’s “Most Eligible Bachelors” edition, an issue that has a distribution of more than 40 million.

Earnhardt Jr.’s selection was announced on “Dateline NBC” on Tuesday night. It will mark the sixth time Junior has been in People Magazine.

Earnhardt Jr. will also be prominent on MTV this weekend as the network airs the “MTV True Life Marathon.” His one-hour documentary will be re-aired with updated footage shot earlier this year at California Speedway.

Gunselman Gets Busch Series Shot
Larry Gunselman will drive the No. 94 Busch Series car owned by Fred Bickford and Danny Bost in this weekend’s race at Kentucky Speedway. Gunselman has competed part-time in the Busch Series this season with the Brian Weber and Associates team and in the Craftsman Truck Series with MB Motorsports.

Gunselman raced in 19 NCTS events in 2001 with Mike Mittler’s team.

“I think the world of Mike and the entire team,” Gunselman said. “Mike decided he wanted to try something different for the upcoming Memphis race, so he is trying out another driver in his truck. There are no hard feelings between the two of us at all. We are just both taking a step back and trying something new.

“I am bringing (sponsor) Waterloo with me this weekend, and I am weighing all my options. I have been talking to some Busch Series teams about some more races this season with Waterloo and myself, and I am interested in talking to more teams. That does not mean that I will not run more races with MB Racing. This is just a one-time deal this weekend to see how things go and how well everyone works together.”
