The Lowes Down

There’s 900 miles of racing on tap at Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend, not counting the race out of the parking lot on Sunday night. A total of 86 drivers hope to celebrate this Memorial Day weekend with a win in Saturday’s Busch Series Carquest Auto Parts 300 or Sunday’s Winston Cup Coca-Cola 600, but as we all know, 84 will go home disappointed.

Here’s a quick look at the contenders and pretenders set to do battle this weekend. We provide this breakdown only for recreational purposes, so please, no wagering at home:

CARQUEST AUTO PARTS 300

2-1
Jason Keller – Might be the hottest driver on the circuit and coming off Nazareth win.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. – Tough to bet against the No. 3 car at Charlotte.

3-1
Scott Riggs – A rookie in name only.
Greg Biffle – Sore and bruised after last week’s Nazareth crash but still a threat.
Jeff Burton – Ugly car yes, but the Roush Busch program is legendary.

5-1
Jack Sprague – Overdue for a Busch win and sick of hearing it.
Randy Lajoie – Always likes running at Charlotte and also due to win.

10-1
Kenny Wallace – If he lays off the Mexican food, he has a chance.
Mike McLaughlin – Can Gibbs Cup success at Charlotte work in Busch?
Todd Bodine – A proven winner trying to gel with new team.

15-1
Bobby Hamilton, Jr. – Broke into win column and now has confidence.
Stacy Compton – Seventh in points but no career Busch wins.
Jamie McMurray – Impressive young driver will win in 2002.

25-1
Johnny Sauter – ASA wasn’t this hard.
Ashton Lewis – Young and learning.
Shane Hmiel – Strong qualifier needs race consistency.

35-1
Casey Mears – Up and down season.
Ricky Hendrick – Still recovering from early season injuries.

50-1
Larry Foyt – Has to stay out of trouble before emptying A.J.’s checkbook.
Kerry Earnhardt – Keep Bradshaw out of pits and odds drop to 40-1.

100-1
Mark Green – After ER career ended two weeks ago, anything can happen.
Kevin Grubb – Tough last few weeks for Jeffrey the Giraffe and company.
Jimmy Kitchens – Needs everything but the kitchen sink to help him win.

COCA-COLA 600

2-1
Jeff Gordon – Amazing draught has to end.
Tony Stewart – With only one race to run a definite favorite
Bobby Labonte – Almost magical presence at Charlotte.

3-1
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. – Can a weekend sweep still happen in NASCAR?
Sterling Marlin – The class of the field last October at Charlotte.
Matt Kenseth – Win number three a definite possibility.

5-1
Jimmie Johnson – Has already shown his prowess in qualifying.
Ryan Newman – Victory just around the corner for impressive rookie.

10-1
Ricky Rudd – Iron Man could be Superman on Sunday.
Jeremy Mayfield – A Charlotte favorite and coming around in Dodge.
Dale Jarrett – Winston problems behind him.

15-1
Rusty Wallace – Point championship contender needs a win.
Mark Martin – Poised to add to Roush victory total.
Kevin Harvick – Seems to have calmed down lately.

20-1
Ward Burton – Would love the second leg of NASCAR’s Triple Crown.
Jeff Burton – Another Roush threat who runs well at Charlotte.
Ricky Craven – Could Tide come in Sunday night?
Jimmy Spencer – Has had a bullseye on his back his entire career.

25-1
Bill Elliott – A Charlotte win would truly be a “Blast from the Past.”

40-1
Robby Gordon – Can anyone pull off this holiday double dip?
Kyle Petty – Things have been on an upswing, but a win?
Ken Schrader – Unluckiest driver of the season.

50-1
Mike Skinner – Hasn’t been a real Kodak moment this year.
Elliott Sadler – Good qualifying effort but team lacking chemistry.
Bobby Hamilton – Needs to catch a break.
Stacy Compton – Study A.J.’s past Memorial Day performances for inspiration.

100-1
Ron Hornaday – Wham BAM thank-you…never mind.
Jeff Green – AOL car has been DOA lately.
