Texas Pretty Tough On Schrader

After two days of rain showers, Texas Motor Speedway was able to dry out enough for the No. 36 Combos® machine and the rest of the Winston Cup field to race on Monday morning. Soon after the drop of the green flag, driver Ken Schrader reported to the crew that the No. 36 car was tight in the corners. As the long run continued, the condition worsened dropping the No. 36 car from 12th to 22nd place.

NASCAR waved a mandatory caution flag at lap 35. Since the Winston Cup cars had not practiced since Friday morning, NASCAR wanted the teams to check tire wear. The Combos® team made a major track bar adjustment and a wedge adjustment in an attempt to free up the car for Schrader. Because of the major adjustments, the team was forced to give up some track position and restart in 35th.

The changes appeared to help the Combos® car early in the run as Schrader moved up five spots very quickly. By lap 60 Schrader had moved up to 25th place, however, he again began to report tight handling conditions. The longer the run, the tighter the Combos® car would get.

The Combos® team came in for a green flag pit stop at lap 108. The pit crew made another wedge and a track bar adjustment. As Schrader pulled away from the pit, the team realized the adjustment wrench had been left in the back of the car. A crew member attempted to retrieve the wrench but fell. The No. 36 Combos® car had to return to the pits, and lost two laps to the leader due to the miscue. Schrader fell to 37th place.

The Combos® team continued to struggle with a tight handling car throughout the remainder of the race. The pit crew made several adjustments in upcoming pit stops, but Schrader continued to have difficulty on the track. The Combos® team finished the race 34th.
